An Antique 19th Century Chinese Porcelain Stem Bowl
An Antique 19th Century Chinese Famille Rose Porcelain Stem Bowl with Provenance. This unusual stem bowl is hand-decorated with dragon-like beasts set amidst floral decoration and painted against a yellow ground. Painted line designs are applied around the lower section with a further shaped design around the top edge. The vase is painted in green, pink and blue enamels on a yellow ground. The swastika symbol is painted on the stem. It is used as a symbol of well being and good luck in India, China, and South-East Asian countries. Ca. Qing Dynasty, 19th Century. Size h 4 X d 4 1/2. Provenance: Collection of Edward Hyers Clayton (1886-1946). American writer and missioner. E.H. Clayton and his wife were missionaries of the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society in charge of Wayland Academy, a missionary school in Hangzhou, China from 1912 to 1942. E.H. Clayton wrote a book Heaven Below based on his living experience in China.
