VINTAGE RUSSIAN TEMPERA PAINTING BY DMITRY SHAGIN - A vintage tempera on canvas painting by Dmitry Shagin, born in 1957, a Russian artist. The painting depicts a composition in red and blue tones with a sailor and a boat on the water against the backdrop of a landscape and church domes in the distance. Signed with initials lower right. The reverse side bears the title Bratok, as well as the information that this is the central part of a triptych created in 1990. Provenance: Gifted directly by the artist to Suzanne Massie, 1931 to 2025, the American scholar and noted interpreter of Russian culture, whose close relationships with artists, institutions, and intellectuals in both the United States and Russia were fostered through decades of cultural exchange, including close friendships with Mihail Chemiakin and Dmitri Shagin. An informal advisor to Ronald Reagan during the final years of the Cold War, specifically on topics relating to Russia, and in dialogue with figures including Mikhail Gorbachev, Massie played a significant role in advancing mutual understanding between the two nations; works gifted to her reflect this unique network of artistic and diplomatic connections.
