EGYPTIAN OIL PAINTING BY MAHMOUD SAID 1939 - An oil painting on canvas laid on panel by Mahmoud Said, Egyptian, 1897 to 1964, the widely recognized father of Egyptian modernism. Signed lower right, dated 1939. The work depicts a quintessential Egyptian scene likely along the Nile, featuring veiled women and sun-drenched architecture. Mahmoud Said Bey was an Egyptian judge and painter from Alexandria. Between 1919 and his death in 1964, Said was a prolific oil painter. In Alexandria, he first trained for two years with the Italian painter Amelia Casonato Da Forno from 1912 and later with Arturo Zanieri from 1916.
