Homer Watson has been characterized as the painter who first painted Canada as Canada, rather than as a pastiche of European painting. He was a member and president of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, as well as a founding member and first president of the Canadian Art Club. His most frequent subjects are the countryside views near Doon.
