BENEDICT MASSON ANTIQUE FRENCH OIL PAINTING 1893 - Benedict Masson, French, 1819 to 1893, an antique oil on canvas painting depicting an expressive scene with a half nude woman with two children, possibly Eve with Cain and Abel, in a landscape, 1893. Signed and dated lower left. Housed in a wooden frame with a metal name plate below. Benedict Masson was a French painter well known for his history, mythological compositions, allegorical subjects, genre scenes, portraits, flowers, murals. He was a pupil of Lyonnais Paul Chenavart and especially Paul Delaroche to whom he must undoubtedly his training as a painter of civil and religious history. He appeared almost every year at the Salon, from 1840 to 1881 and was chosen under the Second Empire to make a great mural for the Hotel des Invalides, illustrating the century of Charlemagne.
