AMERICAN ALLEGORICAL WOMANS HOLY WAR OIL PAINTING - An antique American oil on board allegorical political painting dedicated to the struggle with alcohol, titled Womans Holy War, Grand Charge on the Enemys Works. Circa mid to late 19th century. The painting depicts a woman in armor and carrying an axe, chopping down barrels of alcohol, rum, brandy, and others. On the reverse side there is a note with an illegible inscription, obviously an explanation of the plot of the picture. Framed. The Holy War was the nineteenth century crusade for temperance and prohibition, whose advocates were predominantly clergymen and women. Allegorical Political Cartoon Paintings, Home Decor.
