ANTIQUE JAPANESE SATSUMA SHIMAZU PORCELAIN VASES
A pair of antique Japanese Satsuma pottery vases. Late Meiji era, before 1912. Miniature amphoras mounted elephant figures. The vases are decorated with a depiction of Buddhist monks, or Arhat, with a white dragon. Richly gilded. Makers mark with Shimazu family crest on the bottom. Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese pottery which originated in Satsuma Province, since the 19th century it was mainly produced for Western export and therefore elaborately decorated. Shimazu clan was the main producer of Satsuma ware. Collectible Oriental Asian Decor, Japanese Pottery.
