ANTIQUE ENGRAVINGS VATICAN GROTESQUES BY OLD MASTERS
A pair of antique engravings of the Vatican Grotesques by two Italian Old Masters, Gaetano Savorelli, 1770 to 1791, and Giovanni Ottaviani, 1735 to 1808. These engravings have a history associated with Renaissance artist Raphael. In the early 16th century, Raphael painted a loggia in the Vatican with Grotesque drawings based on the remnants of classical decorations found in the grottos excavated under the Vatican. In the 1770s were made these copies. 18th century engravings were later hand colored. The first engraving has the text in Latin below Cai Savorelli Pict, et Pet, Camporesi Arch. Delin. The second engraving has the text in Latin below Ottaviani sculp. cum privilegio S.D.N. Clementis XIII and was created before the death of Clementis XIII in 1769. Museum Exhibits and Historical Relics.
