The diptych depicts the Japanese commander Minamoto no Yoshitsune leading his men in the descent of the Hiyodori goe at the Battle of Ichinotani. Utagawa Kuniyoshi, 1798 to 1861, was one of the prominent Japanese artists and color printmakers of the late Edo period, a representative of the ukiyo e genre.
