ANTIQUE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHRIST PANTOCRATOR ICON
An antique Russian Orthodox hand painted icon of Christ Pantocrator. The icon depicts Christ holding the New Testament in his left hand and making the gesture of teaching or of blessing with his right. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. The icon is decorated with imitation enamel on the corners and borders. Executed on Gold background. The image of Christ Pantocrator was one of the first images of Christ developed in the Early Christian Church and remains a central icon of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Dates to the 19th century.
