ANTIQUE JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT BY UTAGAWA HIROSHIGE
Utagawa Hiroshige, Japanese, 1797 to 1858, an antique Taisho era ukiyo e color woodblock print on Washi paper, The Soga Brothers father Kawazu no Saburo Sukemichi defeating Matano Goro Kagehisa. Tale of the Soga Brothers. 1917. Signed in the plate, lower right. Inscribed with Calligraphy lower left and right, and to the center right. Utagawa Hiroshige, born Ando Tokutaro, was a Japanese ukiyo e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition. Hiroshige is best known for his horizontal format landscape series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō and for his vertical format landscape series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. The subjects of his work were atypical of the ukiyo e genre, whose typical focus was on beautiful women, popular actors, and other scenes of the urban pleasure districts of Japans Edo period, 1603 to 1868. Antique Asian and Oriental Graphic Art Prints and Collectibles.
