ANTIQUE BRITISH ETCHING BY JOHN HAMILTON MORTIMER - John Hamilton Mortimer, 1740 to 1779, British, etching and stipple engraving on thick, slightly textured, beige laid paper, Duke of York from Twelve Characters from Shakespeare. This etching comes from a series that Mortimer devoted to leading Shakespearean characters, based on drawings exhibited at the Society of Artists in 1775. The artist here portrays the Duke of York, leader of one of the rival sides in the Wars of the Roses. Titled in the print, upper to the center. Inscribed with the second part of Henry IV, Act V, Scene 4th, lower to the center. Published 15 March 1776, by J. Mortimer, Norfolk Street, Strand. John Hamilton Mortimer was a British figure and landscape painter and printmaker, known for romantic paintings set in Italy, works depicting conversations, and works drawn in the 1770s portraying war scenes, similar to those of Salvator Rosa.
