ANTIQUE ITALIAN GRAND TOUR HAND PAINTED WOOD BOX - An antique Italian hand painted wood box, casket. The box with lock and key and a green velvet interior. The lid is inscribed: PAX TIBI MARCE EVANGELISTA MEVS, Peace unto you, Mark, my Evangelist. Venetian tradition states that when Mark was traveling through Europe, he arrived at a lagoon in Venice, whereby an angel appeared to him and said, Pax tibi Marce, evangelista meus. Hic requiescet corpus tuum. Peace be with thee, O Mark, my evangelist. Here thy body will rest. The front side shows a winged lion holding a Bible and a kneeling doge Francesco Foscari from the Doge Palace in Venice. Marked on the bottom. This casket is probably a Grand Tour souvenir.
