VINTAGE CHINESE REPUBLICAN PERIOD BUDDHA FIGURES
A set of two vintage Famille Rose porcelain seated Buddha or Budai figures from the Chinese Republic Period, 1912 to 1949. In Chinese folklore, Budai is a Buddhist deity who has been integrated into Buddhism, Taoism and Shinto religions. Both figurines are neatly hand painted, the figurine depicting Budha with children features an incised mark to the bottom. The historical Budai lived during the 10th century C.E. and was a monk. In Japan, Budai, Hotei or Maitreyan Buddha is considered one of the 7 gods of happiness. According to legend, Budai brings good luck if you rub his belly. In art, Budai is often shown as being a fat, bald smiling man wearing a robe, either wearing or carrying prayer beads and has a huge belly. Seen as the symbol of abundance, contentment, happiness, luck and generosity. Oriental, Asian Artworks, Home Decor, Budai, Collectibles, Buddha Maitreya.
