ANCIENT GREEK CERAMIC FIGURINE FROM TANGARA
An ancient Greek ceramic figurine from Tangara depicting a seated female. Presumably 5th century BC. Tanagra figurines are the most common type of ancient Greek terracotta figurines of the Hellenistic era and give an idea of the clothing and life of ancient Greek women. The name is given after one of the centers for the production of such figurines, the city of Tanagra in Boeotia. Miniature clay figurines were made in many ancient settlements of the 5th-2nd centuries BC. e. mainly as objects offered as gifts to the gods. They were lowered into the grave along with the deceased. In addition to the funeral cult, such figurines were used to decorate the home and, possibly, as childrens toys.
