ANTIQUE 18TH C RUSSIAN ORTHODOX ICON OF ST BARBARA - A rare antique Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Beheading of Saint Barbara. Hand painted with egg tempera on a levkas wooden board, and housed in a figural wooden frame. Circa the 18th century. Saint Barbara known in the Eastern Orthodox Church as the Great Martyr Barbara, was an early Christian Greek saint and martyr. According to legend, Saint Barbara was executed by her pagan father, Dioscorus, when she refused to recant her Christian faith.
