ANTIQUE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX THE OMNISCIENT EYE ICON - An antique Russian Orthodox hand painted icon, The Omniscient Eye or All Seeing Eye of God. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, levkas on a wood board with kovcheg. Circa: 1800s. The ideological and dogmatic basis of the plot of The Eye, quotes from little known compositions of the 18th century are a reflection of Christian mystical cosmogony. In the 19th century similar icons, too mysterious and complex in content, were revered by the people as healing, protecting against eye diseases. Interesting subject symbolizing the omniscience of the Creator over his creation, who sees and hears all acts and thoughts. Christ Emmanuel is represented radiating from the center of the eyes of divine. Wisdom, surrounded by Seraphim and the symbols of the Tetralogue of the Evangelists, the Virgin of Pokrov Protection, and the Creator.
