INDIAN KASHMIRI KANGRI LOW GRADE SILVER CREAMER
An antique Kashmiri Kangri low grade silver creamer. The ware is modeled after a kangri basket, of globular form upon a pierced trumpet foot simulating basket weave and an open work rim. The creamer with a curved spout opposite a C scroll handle is modeled as a serpent. The ware is adorned with deeply chased, engraved, hammered decorations in chinar leaf, floral, foliage, and scrollwork patterns. Circa: late 19th century. Kashmir considered a kind of paradise since the Mughal times, was known for its shawls of a characteristic paisley design, said to resemble the form of a mango. Local silversmiths, predominantly Muslim by culture, incorporated paisley patterns into silver objects. Popular forms include the regional forms of kashukul boat shaped bowl and kangri, which were incorporated into tea services. Another popular Kashmiri theme for silver was the Chinar leaf design.
