INDIAN COMPANY SCHOOL PAINTING SHEEP EATING FAKIR

Watercolor on paper painting. Indian miniature of Company school, Calcutta, ca. 1850s. The artwork depicts fakir Jurah Geer Berah Geer, a devotee of Vishnu, eating sheep by disemboweling them with his mouth. Black margins. White mat. Company school, also called Patna painting, is style of miniature painting that developed in India in the second half of the 18th century in response to the tastes of the British serving with the East India Company. Favorite subjects were scenes of Indian daily life, local rulers, and sets of festivals and ceremonies. Provenance: a similar artwork was sold at Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art auction in London, 11 June 2020, lot 180. Collectible Oriental Graphic Art, Indian Miniature Painting.

Dimensions: Mate 16 x 12 1/2 in, painting 11 1/2 x 8 in. All measurements are approximate.


Condition: Overall good vintage condition. Signs of age and wear. Refer to photos. Sold As Is.
