Beisaku Taguchi, Japanese, 1864 to 1903, an original antique woodblock print on paper, Specialist Captain Higuchi Shows Mercy, from the series Sino Japanese War: Stories of the Courageous and Loyal. Published by Mizuno Senjiro, 1895. Inscribed upper right. Marked with a red seal, lower left. Inscribed in the print, lower to the center. Three red seals, on the backside. Taguchi Beisaku was an artist, best known for his prints of the Sino Japanese War. Taguchi Beisaku was born in 1864 in Tochigi prefecture as the son of a rice merchant. In 1873 he went to Tokyo to study the art of painting. Later Taguchi Beisaku met the painter and printmaker Kiyochika Kobayashi and learned woodblock printmaking. Under the influence of Kiyochika Kobayashi, Taguchi Beisaku learned the aspects of coloring, especially the shading of colors reflecting the influence of light and shadows.
