RUSSIAN MENOLOGICAL AUGUST MOTHER OF GOD ICON
An antique Russian Orthodox Menological icon for August month with twelve images of Mother of God. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on wood board. Inscribed upper to the center. Each image is inscribed upper or lower to the center. The patron saints of each day standing next to each other, wearing garments respective to their position in the celestial hierarchy and bearing their attributes. Menology of August', dating back to the beginning of XVIII century and coming from orthodox Russian school of Yaroslavl. These icons called menologion yearly, are tables whose compositional graphic style derives from miniatures first collections portraying the life of saints. Circa: the second half of the 19th century.
