VERY RARE ANTIQUE 1860S AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN
A Post Civil War, antique 1860s tintype, or ferrotype, photographic print on metal plaque. The portrait of a wealthy Afroamerican lady dressed in a very popular garment although modified to American trends, named popularly as Garibaldi dress, popular around 1862, and characterized by its puffy shoulders and narrow waist. However, the change of color and design on the collar signal the portrait is of a widow. The presence of jewelry and a particular conservative hair style indicates a high social status. Tintype is the popular moniker for melainotype, which got its name from the dark color of the unexposed photographic plate, and ferrotype, named after the plates iron composition.
