ANTIQUE RUSSIAN ICON HOLY FACE OF JESUS CHRIST - An antique 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon representing the Holy Face of Jesus Christ or Mandylion, known in the Western tradition as the Image of Edessa. Mixed media painting: egg tempera, gesso, and levkas on a wood board. The face of Christ is encompassed with elaborate ornaments imitating a gilt silver riza or oklad. This image refers to the first Christian icon, a square or rectangular cloth upon which a miraculous image of the face of Jesus had been imprinted. Antique Christian Religious Items and Collectibles.
