An ancient Roman Leo I AV Solidus gold Roman coin, 457-474 AD. Obverse: helmeted and cuirassed bust facing slightly right, holding shield and spear over shoulder, reverse: Victory standing left, holding long jeweled cross. Well preserved coin with good detail. Comes with a special coin case with a ICG Grade paper label featuring the special information about the coin. Leo I, in full Leo Thrax Magnus, Eastern Roman emperor from AD 457 to 474. Leo was a Thracian who, beginning his career in the army, became a protege of General Aspar. In proclaiming Leo Eastern emperor at Constantinople in Feb. 7, 457, Aspar expected to use him as a puppet ruler. Leo, who had recognized Majorian as emperor of the West in 457, withheld recognition from Majorian’s successor, Libius Severus, in 461. Six years later he installed Anthemius as the Western emperor.
