ANTIQUE JAPANESE UKIYO-E PRINT OF KABUKI ACTORS
An antique Japanese color woodblock print on board of Ukiyo-e genre. The artwork represents a fight scene from a Kabuki theater piece titled Keian Taiheiki, Keian Uprising by the Japanese playwright Kawatake Mokuami, 1816-1893. The play retells the failed revolt against the Tokugawa shogunate in 1651. Kabuki is a classical form of Japanese dance-drama that originated during the early Edo period, 1603-1868. Yakusha-e, or Actor Prints in English, is a sub-genre of Japanese woodblock prints widely known as Ukiyo-e. This print belongs to the circle of Toyohara Kunichika, 1835-1900, a Japanese artist who primarily produced yakusha-e artworks. Collectible Oriental Art, Japanese Woodblock.
Dimensions: 14 x 28 in. All measurements are approximate.
