THE JERUSALEM BIBLE FIRST EDITION W ILLUSTRATIONS
The Jerusalem Bible, published by Doubleday & Co., Inc. in New York, 1966. First Edition. In 1943 Pope Pius XII issued an encyclical letter which encouraged Roman Catholics to translate the scriptures from the Hebrew and Greek texts, rather than from Jerome's Latin Vulgate. The first effort was made by French scholars in 1956. This French translation served as the basis for an English translation, upon which among others worked J.R.R. Tolkien who translated the Book of Jonah. The Jerusalem Bible became the first widely-accepted Roman Catholic English translation of the Bible since its 17th-century version. This edition contains copious footnotes, introductions, and color illustrations. The book is hardcover and comes in original box. The handwritten inscriptions on the box and the flyleaf that the book previously belonged to Thomas E. Klocek, a former instructor at DePaul University whose teaching career ended as a result of an altercation with pro-Palestinian students in 2004. This conflict received a wide coverage in press. Collectible Antiquarian Christian Religious Books.
Dimensions: Case 10 x 6 3/4 x 3 1/4 in. All measurements are approximate.
