PAIR ANTIQUE EUROPEAN ETCHINGS OF MALE PORTRAITS

A pair of antique copper plate etchings on laid paper. The first: Knight in Armour after Giorgione (Giorgio Barbarelli de Castelfranco) (Italian, c.1477 or c. 1478-1510); engraved by master etcher Paul- Adolphe Rajon (French, 1843-1888), 1875; signed and dated in the plate lower to the center. Giorgione (Italian, 1477-78 or 1473-74-1510) was an Italian painter of the Venetian school during the High Renaissance, who died in his thirties. He is known for the elusive poetic quality of his work, though only about six surviving paintings are firmly attributed to him. The uncertainty surrounding the identity and meaning of his work has made Giorgione one of the most mysterious figures in European art. Paul-Adolphe Rajon (1843 -1888) was a French painter and printmaker, who started his career as a photographer. The second: Selfportrait of Bartolome Esteban Murillo after Bartolome Esteban Murillo; engraved by master etcher Charles Oliver Murray, 1877; signed in the plate lower right and left. Bartolome Esteban Murillo (1617 1618-1682) was a Spanish Baroque painter. Although he is best known for his religious works, Murillo also produced a considerable number of paintings of contemporary women and children. These lively, realist portraits of flower girls, street urchins, and beggars constitute an extensive and appealing record of the everyday life of his times. He also painted two self-portraits, one in the Frick Collection portraying him in his 30s, and one in London's National Gallery portraying him about 20 years later. Charles Oliver Murray (1842-1923) was a Scottish artist and printmaker. Graphic Art Prints and Collectibles.

Dimensions: Smallest 13 3/8" x 10" in. Biggest 13 7/8" x 9 5/8" in. All measurements are approximate.
