VINTAGE JAPANESE UKIYO E COLOR WOOD BLOCK PRINT
A vintage Japanese Ukiyo e color wood block print on paper depicting the arrival of cranes and traditional landscape. After Katsushika Hokusai Edo period wood block inc and color on paper from Hokusai Gafu, 1849 (Kaei 2), from three volume set of illustrations is printed in ink and light colors. The preface to volume 3 dates it to 1849, the year of Hokusais death. According to Toda, this title includes illustrations from an 1820 volume with the same title and is supplemented by other images, including landscapes, still lifes, and bird and flower images as well as various scenes of human activity. Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese, 1760-1849) known simply as Hokusai, was a Japanese artist, ukiyo e painter and printmaker of the Edo period. Hokusai is best known for the woodblock print series Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji which includes the internationally iconic print The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Matted. Circa: early 20th century.
