ORIENTAL OIL PAINTING AFTER JOHN FREDERIC LEWIS
An oriental bazaar scene painted in oil on board after The Bezestein Bazaar of El Khan Khalil, Cairo by John Frederick Lewis, British, 1804–1876. This very fine copy is painted in the late 19th or early 20th century, signed on the lower right: R. Nelson. Beautifully framed with an ornate gilt wood frame.John Frederick Lewis was one of the best known Victorian Orientalist artists who were fascinated by Far Eastern culture. His very careful and loving representation of Islamic architecture, furnishings, screens, and costumes set new standards of realism, which influenced other artists, including the leading French Orientalist painter Jean-Léon Gérôme in his later works.
