1934 ANGRIFF ”A NAZI TRAVELS TO PALESTINE” MEDAL - Very rare and absolutely authentic silver medal reading on obverse: ”EIN NAZI FÄHRT NACH PALAESTINA” (”A Nazi Travels to Palestine”) about a Star of David, and on reverse: ”UND ERZAEHLT DAVON IM Angriff” (”And tells about it in Angriff”) beneath a mobile swastika. Made by Lauer of Nuremberg. Very good to fine. In the spring of 1933 SS member Baron Leopold von Mildenstein, later head of the Jewish section of the SD, spent six months travelling Palestine. Zionists proposed that the status of German Jews be regulated on a group basis, and asked for government help in emigration. Von Mildenstein was approached to write something favorable about Zionism and its project in Palestine, and agreed. He was favorably impressed, and saw advantages for Germany, as well as for the SS as proposers of an accommodating policy. A 12-part series of articles entitled ”Ein Nazi faehrt nach Palestina” began in September 1934 in Der Angriff, Joseph Goebbels' propaganda newspaper. Von Mildenstein saw in Jewish settlements a form of rebirth fitting Nazi notions about blood and soil, as well as a way of ridding Germany of Jews. But life was difficult in Palestine, as Palestinian Arab resistance grew against Zionist colonization and British rule. The newspaper Der Angriff had this medal struck to commemorate his voyage to Palestine and to promote the series of articles. It is interesting to note that von Mildenstein brought Adolf Eichmann into the Jewish Department. Rare.
