POLISH JEW'S SPORTS AWARD MEDAL, 1925 - Engraved sports medal awarded and named to a Jew and apparently worn by him as well. The 1.125 in. diameter medal, probably silver, is apparently Italian made. It depicts three full-standing athletes on the obverse. The reverse bears an engraving in Hebrew: ”1st Prize H. Kaplan Maccabee Wilkomir 6.7.25” A metal ring to accommodate a chain is fitted at top. Very good. This item, from a 30+ year German collection of Judaica, is accompanied by the owner's note indicating that this piece was purchased in Memel (Lithuania) in 1995. ”Wilkomir” on the medal may refer to the Polish city of the same name, or one of the Polish settlement areas in Latvia.
