FRANCOIS ALEXANDRE FREDERIC DE LA ROCHEFOUCAULD-LIANCOURT
(1747-1827) French social reformer and member of the Estates General, where he sought in vain to support the monarchy while furthering social reform. Just two days before the storming of the Bastille, he warned King Louis XVI of the state of affairs in Paris. When the king exclaimed that there was a revolt, Liancourt replied: 'No, majesty, it is a revolution.' Exiled from France in 1792. A.E.S. on the verso of a partly-printed document, 1p. sm. 4to., La Haye, Amsterdam, 1807, confirming the life annuity of one Madam Jacoba Cornelia Charlotte de la Fontaine d'Orgemont. Signed boldly on the verso. Tiny non-intrusive tears and holes, else fine.
