RICHARD STOCKTON - (1730 - 1781) Signer of the Declaration of Independence from New Jersey and member of the Continental Congress. Exceptionally rare A.L.S. 'Rich'd Stockton', 2pp. legal folio, [n.p.], May 3, 1771 to a 'Mr. Hunt', legal content concerning an estate. In small part: '...I have considered your last state of the case respecting the recovery. Nothing is more fully settled than that the suffering of a recovery after making a will is a revocation. I took it for granted from your first state that the recovery must be said to be after the will, and I confess that your second state has not entirely altered my opinion. The case of Selwyn as reported by Burrow does not apply, because the reasons by which the court went upon do not appear...' The letter continues with Stockton citing other cases relative to this one. Ink has slightly faded the letter to about 7/10, else fine condition. Stockton is the twelfth rarest Signer - in twenty years, only one Stockton autograph letter sold between London and New York.
