JOHN WITHERSPOON - (1723 - 1794) American clergyman and Signer of the Declaration of Independence, he also was one of the organizers of the Presbyterian Church along national lines and moderated the church's first General Assembly. Very rare A.D.S. 'Jno.Witherspoon', 1p. 7.25 x 3.25 in., Princeton, Oct. 2, 1773 to Jonathan Sergeant, Treasurer of the College of New Jersey (of which Witherspoon was president). In full: 'Sir: At ten days Sight pay to the order of Elias Baldwin thirty pounds three shillings proclamation Money & place the same to my account. I am your &c. Jno. Witherspoon'. Light toning, else very good condition. Witherspoon is very rare in any form. Elias Baldwin, a prominent shoemaker in Newark, has endorsed a payment on the verso.
