UNION TENTH CORPS BADGE - Rare Civil War-date corps badge from the Union Tenth Corps, Department of the South, approx. 1.5 in. square, formed as a brass square with protruding points at the corners, bearing a square at the center. This had once held the colored enamel used to identify the division, though it is now absent, revealing a gray fabric backing instead. The reverse bears a stick pin. Absent enamel as mentioned, estimated accordingly. From the renowned collection of author and historian J. Duncan Campbell, and offered from an expansive grouping of Civil War corps badges consigned to us, many of which also originate from Campbell's collection. The Department of the South took part in the Bermuda Hundred operations and played a principal role in the disastrous Drewry's Bluff action. It also took part in the attack on Cold Harbor, played a major role in the early stages of the Petersburg Campaign, and later was part of Sherman's Army after Bentonville.
