JOHN A. RAWLINS - (1831 - 1869) Union brigadier general and Grant's staff officer and principal advisor, he rose through the ranks with Grant and eventually became his Secretary of War. War-date A.D.S. on a U.S. Military Telegraph form, 1p. 8vo., 'Stevenson' [Al.], July 27, 1864, to Col. THEODORE S. BOWERS (1832-1866), an aide to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, then in Nashville. Difficult to read, in part: '...Telegraphed substance of the news...I have just arrived here and did not meet Genl. [?]...will go out and see him...at Huntsville...'. Mounting traces on verso, else fine condition, matted and framed.
