JAMES H. DOOLITTLE - (1896 - 1993) American aviator and USAAF general who gained fame both as a racing pilot and as leader of the first air raid on Tokyo during World War II. Rare signed book 'Not As Briefed' (St. Paul: Brown & Bigelow), ca. 1973. Approx. 200pp. 13 x 10.5 in beige cloth with gold title and decorated with a prison watch tower and barbed wire on the cover. A collection of over 50 captioned color plates of paintings of air combat, camp scenes, fellow prisoners, and some whimsical pieces, all painted by Col. CHARLES R. GREENING while held captive in a German Stalag Luft One. Greening had flown on the Doolittle Mission to Tokyo, bailed out over China, and returned to the theater of war in Europe. He was shot down over Italy on July 17, 1943 and taken prisoner. Greening has signed beside his portrait on the preface. Doolittle signs on the front paste-down, above a label indicating that this is a special signed edition 'limited to 195 copies prepared for A.A.H.S. Members in 1973...' Fine condition.
