1936 BERLIN OLYMPICS POSTER SKETCH
A unique piece of original art, a proposed design for a poster advertising the 1936 Berlin Olympics, 18 in. dia., in gouache on artist's paper. The design consists of a border around the outside edge bearing the legend 'Olympia 1936', with the Olympic rings at bottom. Within this border appear dual globes depicting the Eastern and Western hemispheres, floating above an active sea. Above these globes rises the bell tower of the Berlin Olympic Stadium, wreathed in clouds and flanked by white banners, from which rings out the motto of the games: 'Ich rufe die Jugend der Welt' ('I Call the Youth of the World'). Superimposed over this design at center is the faint outline of a large mobile swastika. The artist's signature 'Stemmer' appears at lower right, within the sea. This apparently refers to H. Stemmer, believed to be a high-ranking official in Cologne during the Third Reich era. Sketches executed by him while imprisoned in England are offered elsewhere in this sale. The work shows folds throughout with some paint loss thereto, as well as chips to the edges, toning, and minor foxing. The work is framed, and retains its bright colors and sharp lines, very good overall.
