SOVIET UNION FLAG, CLAIMED TO BE FLOWN IN BERLIN AT WAR'S END
Red cotton flag, 44.5 x 72 in., bearing the yellow 'hammer and sickle' emblem of the Soviet Union at center. The white canvas hoist bears a metal grommet at each end for hanging, and one side of the hoist bears the inscriptions 'RUSSIA' and '4 x 6', stenciled in black block letters, reminiscent of those used by the American army during and after the war. These flag were commonly flown in Berlin by the American army from 1945 to 1950, to help identify the Soviet side before the construction of the Berlin Wall - when tensions between the two 'world powers' began to escalate. Most crucially, however, the center of the hoist bears a hastily-inscribed 'BERLIN 1945', potentially indicating the location and date at which this flag was flown or captured. Due to incomplete provenance, however, the piece is sold as is.
