EARL WAVELL - (1883 - 1950) Senior British Field Marshal during World War II, best known as the Commander-in-Chief Middle East where he led British forces to victory over the Italians in western Egypt and eastern Libya during Operation Compass. He later served as Commander-in-Chief, India, from 1941 to 1943 and then served as Viceroy of India until his retirement in February 1947. T.L.S. 'Wavell' on Field Marshal letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Kensington, Aug. 5, 1949, to his colleague Brigadier-General B. L. Anley. In part: 'I remember you well at the Senior Officers School, and was glad to hear from you…I have asked Colonel Carkeet-James, the Resident Governor of the Tower [of London], to make arrangements for your American friend…to be shown over the Tower…' Horizontal folds, else fine. Sold with an unsigned photograph of Wavell with another British officer.
