CURT WITTJE - (1894 - 1947) Chief of the SS Main Office, acted as a liaison between Himmler and Theodor Eicke in the latter's development of the Concentration Camp Inspectorate, expelled from the SS on suspicion of homosexuality. T.L.S. on 'Der Chef des SS-Haupt-Amtes' letterhead, 1p. 4to., Berlin, May 14, 1935 - the very day Wittje would be removed as head of the SS main office and replaced by August Heissmeyer, 'because of illness.' In reality, Wittje's alcohol-fueled same-sex binges had become too much for his patron Himmler to tolerate. Wittje writes a somewhat carelessly-worded assessment of SS-Standartenfuhrer Claassen, one of his staff members: '...Quiet, calm, very hard working, reliable...Somewhat soft in appearance...lacks the true agitator qualities. Will have difficulties as a troop leader later on getting into the right internal relationship with his men...' File holes, else very good.
