BERNARD LAW MONTGOMERY - (1887 - 1976) British Field Marshall who commenced the drive at El Alamein that ultimately drove Rommel from North Africa. Also involved in the invasions of Sicily and France. Fine postwar typed D.S. signed 'B. L. Montgomery' and 'Montgomery of Alamein', 1p. 4to., [n.p.], Oct. 27, 1965, a copy of his famous personal message to the men of the 8th Army given on Oct. 23, 1942. In part: '...When I assumed command of the Eighth Army I said that the mandate was to destroy ROMMEL and his Army, and that it would be done as soon as we were ready...We are ready NOW...The battle which is now about to begin will be one of the decisive battles of history...let every officer and man enter the battle with a stout heart, and with the determination to do his duty so long as he has breath in his body. AND LET NO MAN SURRENDER SO LONG AS HE IS UNWOUNDED AND CAN FIGHT...' Folds, marginal light toning, else very good.
