MAJOR GEN. CALEB VANCE HAYNES ''OLD WORN OUT TRANSPORT FLIER'' LEAFLET - An excessively rare air-dropped propaganda leaflet, 7.5 x 4.3 in., thin white paper imprinted in English and Japanese: 'PRESENTED BY YOUR 'OLD WORN OUT TRANSPORT FLIER' HAYNES'. Fine condition. This particular leaflet was kept by Gen. Haynes himself as a memento of the leaflets he dropped (with bombs) on the Japanese. Flying out of India starting in October, 1942, where Haynes had established a few poorly-equipped bomber squadrons using what few aircraft were available, he would often include in their payloads some of these 'Compliments of' leaflets as a continuation of his defiant response to Tokyo Rose who had hung him with that label. CALEB VANCE HAYNES (1895-1966) was a U.S. Air Force major general and one of the most important and talented military aviators and commanders of World War II. Haynes organized the Assam-Burma-China Ferry Command and evacuated Burma with the Chinese and RAF. He then went to China to organize and command the Bomber Command of the China Air Task Force under Gen. Claire Chennault. He later returned to India to organize the India Air Task Force of the 10th Air Force.
