A WINSTON CHURCHILL SIGNED QUOTATION UPLIFTING BRITAIN IN ITS MOST DESPERATE MOMENT - A WINSTON CHURCHILL SIGNED QUOTATION UPLIFTING BRITAIN IN ITS MOST DESPERATE MOMENT A superb signed piece and almost certainly dating from the war years, one of Prime Minister Winston Churchill's most inspiring and enduring quotations presented in a calligraphic hand and signed at conclusion: ”Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duty and so bear ourselves that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years men will say This was their finest hour Winston S. Churchill” This excessively rare document has been hand-painted in various colors and elaborate flourishes, and Churchill has added his signature ”Winston S. Churchill” at the bottom in bold black ink. Measures approx. 10 x 8 inches. Small areas of the calligraphy have faded slightly, and a small spot appears in the margin at upper-left, otherwise this document is in very good condition. Churchill delivered this stirring message before the House of Commons on June 18, 1940 - only two weeks after the British evacuation at Dunkirk, and two days after the French requested an armistice from Germany. British spirits were at a low point. Churchill further urged his countrymen: ”What General Weygand has called the Battle of France is over...the Battle of Britain is about to beginHitler knows that he will have to break us in this island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be freed” Photos for illustrative purposes only and not included.
