School of Maynard Dixon: Study of a Native Woman - School of Maynard Dixon (American, 1875-1946): Study of a Native Woman. Crayon on grey paper, unsigned, framed. After spending his youth on a ranch in Fresno, California , Maynard Dixon headed east to document the landscapes and inhabitants of the deserts of Utah, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, and Arizona. Although he began painting in an impressionistic style, Dixon ultimately felt that it he was doing his subject matter a disservice by depicting it in this manner and, around 1915, began taking a thoroughly modern approach- where all the natural forms were distilled to their essences and complemented by bold colors- to his painting.
