Arthur Safford was born in Boston in 1900, graduated from the Alandale School of Art in Boston and was a student of Ernst L. Major, while attending the Massachusetts School of Art. He received a Bachelors of Arts degree from Calvin Coolidge College in 1944, and a Masters in Philosophy of Art in 1948.
