Bidspirit auction | Ryan Callanan: Acid Icon Marilyn
Ryan Callanan: Acid Icon Marilyn Monroe - Ryan Callanan (British, b. 1981): Acid Icon Marilyn Monroe. Screenprint on canvas. Limited edition 5 of 9. Signed and numbered verso. Unframed. Ryan's work originally rose to fame through his involvement with the street art scene under the pseudonym RYCA. Over the last three years, however, he has developed an ever-increasing presence and reputation creating prints and graphics under his own name. Through combining words and images from popular culture, with the materials and techniques traditionally associated with pub signs, he creates nostalgic, playful images that are both accessible and highly technically accomplished. Daring and dynamic, Street Art has roots in a controversial past. Long-considered vandalism, it was during the 1970s and 1980s that artists including Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring revolutionized the aesthetic, bringing their individual styles to a fine art audience and leading the way for the next generation of artists that includes the likes of Barry McGee, Invader, Mr. Brainwash, Banksy, and Brazilian twins Os Gemeos.
