Portable Stool w/ Five Figures, Baule People, Côte - Baule People, Côte d'Ivoire: A finely carved ceremonial stool which features five caryatid figures (four female and one male) and a sixth support which is a carrying handle. Carved from a single section of wood, the piece has a smooth black/brown patina, with a noticeable lighter patina of use on the handle. The base, encircled with decorative incised rings which are connected by angular hatchings, also shows wear, with sections rubbed smooth. The upper rim of the seat is incised with a single row of decorative angled hatchings, some worn smooth. Some splits in the seat and base have tribal repairs.
