Ernest Rost: Country Cottage Etching - Ernest Christian Rost (American, 1867 - 1940): Country Cottage Etching (Hobbiton), 1893, engraving on paper, signed lower right, framed. Ernest Rost lead a remarkable life: becoming an accomplished painter, engraver, adventurer, writer, photojournalist, botanist and lecturer -- acquiring a noteworthy level of expertise in every one of those fields. This wonderfully detailed antique etching is pencil-signed and dated 1893 by the artist. It is a great example of pastoral etchings which were popular decorations for homes in the late 19th Century. It is newly matted, and installed in a newer gold wood frame which measures 13”x27 1/2” . The glass is original (1890's) and has appropriate bubbles and imperfections. The frame has a few small and unobtrusive dings. 13 x 28 inches framed.
