Bidspirit auction | Jasper Johns, After: Cup 2
Jasper Johns, After: Cup 2 Picasso - Jasper Johns (American, 1930- ) After: Cup 2 Picasso. Lithograph, signed and dated (1973) in plate lower right, un numbered edition, printed by Mourlot, Paris, framed. This print is accompanied by unverified documentation. A number of artists, including Johns, had been invited to contribute prints to an album honoring Picasso who had passed away in 1973. The profiles of Picasso originally came from a photographic portrait of him, which Johns traced over to get the image for Cup 2 Picasso. Johns flips the images of Picasso in profile creating the chalice in the negative space between. It is through this technique that Johns ‘toasts’ the legacy of Pablo Picasso. Medium: original lithograph. Catalogue references: Field 168 and Gemini 276. The plates for this lithograph were prepared at the ULAE studios in New York, printed by Mourlot and published in Paris by XXe Siecle in 1973. After printing, most impressions were trimmed to fit into the XXe Siecle book but this one remains untrimmed. The full sheet measures 15 x 10 1/2 inches (377 x 268 mm). Signed and dated in the plate Jasper Johns is best known for his painting that spans various movements, including abstract expressionism, Neo-Dada, and Pop Art. He is best known for his paintings of the American Flag, with which he explored a familiar, ubiquitous icon in new ways. 21.25 x 18.75 inches Framed.
